Nanzen-ji: The Supreme Zen Temple of Kyoto

Nanzen-ji, situated at the base of Kyoto's Higashiyama mountains, holds the highest rank among Japanese Zen temples and serves as the head temple of the Rinzai Nanzen-ji school. Founded in the 13th century by Emperor Kameyama, it was originally an imperial villa before being converted into a temple.
The temple complex features magnificent structures such as the towering Sanmon Gate and the National Treasure-designated Hojo (abbot's quarters), along with exquisitely landscaped gardens that offer seasonal beauty throughout the year—particularly renowned for their vibrant autumn colors. The brick-red Suirokaku Aqueduct adds a distinctive modern landmark to the historic grounds, creating a harmonious blend of ancient tradition and近代 architecture that embodies Kyoto's enduring history and aesthetic appeal.
