Tofuku-ji Temple: Kyoto's most popular spot for viewing autumn foliage

Tofuku-ji Temple, Japan's oldest and largest Zen temple, is hailed by the Japanese as Kyoto's top autumn viewing spot. Therefore, it's a must-see for anyone visiting Kyoto in autumn.

Getting to Tofuku-ji Temple during the peak of autumn foliage is easy. Simply take the train to Tofuku-ji Station and follow the crowds. With the many thoughtfully placed signs along the way, you'll find your way without a map. Before reaching Tofuku-ji Temple, you'll pass by the Wakumo Bridge (Wakumo Bridge). This bridge is packed with people because of its stunning views of the Tsutenkaku Bridge, the most famous attraction across the way, and its stunning autumn leaves. While the leaves are stunning here, Wakumo Bridge is located lower than Tsutenkaku, so the view doesn't compare to the autumn leaves from Tsutenkaku. However, when it comes to beautiful scenery, you can never have too much, so it's worth stopping to take in the view.

Following the path, you'll reach Tofuku-ji Temple. During the autumn foliage season, Tsutenkaku Bridge and Hojo Gardens have separate entrance fees: 1,000 yen for Tsutenkaku Bridge and 500 yen for Hojo Gardens. If you're short on time and your goal is to see the autumn leaves, just visiting Tsutenkaku Bridge is sufficient. Beyond the entrance gate, there are many other worthwhile buildings, such as the Sanmon Gate and the Zen Hall. Both are among the oldest structures of their kind in Japanese temples. The Toji Temple, next to the Zen Hall, is also home to Japan's oldest surviving toilet.

Also, if you're planning to see all the temples, it's recommended to save Tsutenkaku Bridge for the last stop, as it's a one-way traffic zone and you can't go back once you're on the bridge.
