I've been to Xi'an many times, but this time I followed in the footsteps of Black Myth: Wukong to visit the "Little Western Heaven" Shuilu Temple.
📝Shuilu Temple Introduction:
Shuilu Temple is famous for its well-preserved and rare ancient painted sculptures and is known as the "Second Dunhuang of China". The temple houses more than 3,700 ancient clay sculptures, which are known as "treasures of wall sculptures" and have high artistic, historical, and Buddhist research value. These clay sculptures include stories of the Buddha, the Five Hundred Arhats Crossing the Sea, the Twenty-Four Heavenly Kings, and other figures, as well as heavenly palaces, mountains and rivers, and mythical creatures.
🚗Transportation:
Self-driving/taxi: If there are more than 2 people, it is recommended to take a taxi directly, which costs about CNY 100 one way. It takes about 70 minutes from downtown Xi'an.
Public transportation: Take the subway to "Fangzhicheng Station" and exit from Exit F, then take a taxi. Visit order: Shuilu Temple
🎫Tickets: Free
⏰Opening hours: No reservation required, 9:00 am–5:00 pm, last entry at 4:30 pm
⏱️Visit duration: About 30 minutes, for photography/temple enthusiasts, 1–1.5 hours
The Zhusheng Shuilu Hall is the essence of Shuilu Temple, famous for its exquisite and rare painted sculptures, and is known as the "world's first three-dimensional continuous wall sculpture" P1-6
1️⃣The front wall of the main compartment has three large Buddha statues, namely Sakyamuni, Amitabha, and Medicine Buddha P2
2️⃣The back wall of the main compartment has three large Bodhisattva statues, with Guanyin Bodhisattva in the middle, sitting high on a dragon platform; Manjushri Bodhisattva on the left, riding a blue lion; and Samantabhadra Bodhisattva on the right, riding a white elephant
3️⃣The wall sculptures on the south and north gables are in the form of continuous sculptures, with layers of sculptures depicting the biography of Sakyamuni
🔸Xiawuzhen Temple: Opposite Shuilu Temple
This temple mainly introduces the history of the Pure Land School, and the Mahavira Hall houses a reclining Buddha
Visit duration: 10–15 minutes Zhongnan Mountain
🔸If you have enough time, you can also go to Shangwuzhen Temple: Zhongnan Mountain Wuzhen Scenic Area to the main entrance of the scenic area, tickets are CNY 20; it is said that there is also a free road, but it is recommended to take the safe and secure scenic road~
