🌿 Xiaoxihu Park – A Quiet Escape by the Yellow River

While Lanzhou is known for dramatic Yellow River views and bustling noodle shops, I found a peaceful gem tucked right in the city — Xiaoxihu Park (小西湖公园).

📍 Located on Xijin East Road, this park has a fascinating history. It was once the royal garden of a Ming Dynasty prince and later renamed “Xiaoxihu” by General Yang Changjun in 1880 to honor his hometown roots. 🌸

Originally a natural lake surrounded by reeds, lotuses, and birds, Xiaoxihu has long been known for its “Lotus Pond Moonlight” (莲池夜月) – one of the Eight Scenic Views of ancient Lanzhou. 🌙 During lotus season, the moonlight on the water is absolutely magical.

🏞️ Rebuilt in 1987 as an urban park blending history, ecology, and leisure, Xiaoxihu is now divided into four sections: East Lake, Central Lake, West Lake, and the island lotus pond. The views combine northern boldness with southern charm, offering willow trees, bridges, and reflective waters that feel almost Jiangnan-esque.

📸 Perfect for slow walks, sunset moments, or reading in a pavilion by the lake. Definitely worth a visit if you’re craving a break from the city’s hustle.

📸 Why visit?
• Less touristy than White Pagoda Mountain or Zhongshan Bridge
• Great spot to see locals enjoying their daily routines
• Beautiful willow-lined paths along the Yellow River
