The name "Drepung" derives from this imagery, meaning "heap of rice" in Tibetan, symbolizing prosperity and auspiciousness. Its full Tibetan name translates to "Auspicious Heap of Rice, Island of Supreme Victory," highlighting its esteemed status within the Gelug school.

As the largest monastery in Lhasa and the entire Tibet region, Drepung Monastery is not only rich in history but also renowned for its extensive collection of precious artifacts.
