We arrived at Lijiang Old Town on the first day of the Year of the Tiger. Our driver took us to an underground parking lot, as it is almost impossible to get inside the city with a car. The old town is very well preserved, with its narrow roads and even narrower alleys, connecting streets and squares together.
If you don't pay attention to the map, you can get lost very easily.
If you start your visit of the old Town early in the morning, around 8 o'clock, you can find a very peaceful and still sleeping city. Almost all shops are closed and you can take magnificent pictures with the alleys and houses.
Around 10 o'clock you will see the lively city already. Shops are opened, you can taste local delicacies, as flower cakes, fresh fruits and some local snacks. There are a lot of shops where you can wear traditional clothes, put on some makeup and take some photos around the old town.
There are many restaurants inside the old city, where you can eat lunch or dinner.
You can visit also with small children. Be aware that the streets are paved with stones, so you should prepare an appropriate buggy or baby carrier. Also some parts are quite dangerous (might fall into water), so make sure you keep an eye on your children all the time.
