On a lazy afternoon in Shuhe Old Town, I turned a corner and was stunned by the sight of a magnificent late-blooming cherry tree,a rare variety of double-petaled sakura with blossoms so densely layered they looked like fluffy pink clouds weighing down the branches. Each petal was nearly as large as a coin, glowing translucent in the sunlight. When the wind blew, the cobblestone path was showered in cherry blossom snow, and a group of girls in Naxi shawls laughed as they twirled beneath the flowers, capturing the moment.
But the real surprise came as I wandered toward the Tea Horse Road Museum—glancing up, I suddenly saw a cascade of wisteria tumbling over the walls of a centuries-old house. The delicate purple blooms hung like clusters of wind chimes, their sweet fragrance so enchanting that passersby couldn’t help but slow their steps. The vibrant exuberance of the cherry blossoms and the quiet elegance of the wisteria painted Shuhe’s spring in two entirely different shades of romance.
