Timeless Stone Paths: A Spring Stroll Through Lijiang Old Town

As part of my spring itinerary in Yunnan, I visited Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城) — one of China’s most iconic and charming ancient towns. Arriving in the afternoon, I wandered through its cobblestone lanes lined with traditional wooden houses, lively tea shops, boutique inns, and canals flowing with clear mountain water.

Spring brought blooming flowers and fresh air, making it perfect for aimless exploration. The Naxi culture was on full display — locals in traditional dress, Dongba symbols on walls, and music from the square dancing in Sifang Street. As the sun dipped lower, red lanterns lit up and the town’s romantic side came alive.

Despite being popular with tourists, there are still quiet corners and scenic rooftops if you wander away from the main crowds. The atmosphere was vibrant but not overwhelming — a living blend of culture, history, and modern leisure.

Travel Tips:
• Best time to visit: Afternoon to evening — stay for golden hour and night lights.
• Wear comfortable shoes: Streets are stone-paved and sometimes uneven.
• Avoid peak crowd zones: Explore side alleys for quieter, authentic scenes.
• Try local snacks: Like rose cakes, yak jerky, and Lijiang-style noodles.
• Respect local customs: Especially in cultural spaces or religious areas.
• Photographers’ tip: Rooftop bars and small bridges offer great golden hour shots.

How to Get There:
• By car from Lijiang Sanyi Airport: Around 30–40 minutes by taxi or Didi.
• By train: Arrive at Lijiang Railway Station, then take a taxi or bus to the old town gate.
• Entrance: Some areas are free to enter; others may require a ticket or registration.
• Combine with: Visits to Black Dragon Pool, Shuhe Ancient Town, or Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
