Dayan Ancient Town, the largest of the three ancient towns in Lijiang, was originally the old city area of Lijiang. It has been an important commercial town since ancient times. The streets are built according to the mountain terrain and along the water flow, and are arranged in the shape of a Bagua formation.
Dayan Ancient Town was built during the Song and Yuan Dynasties. Surrounded by green mountains, its shape resembles a large jade inkstone, hence the homophonic name "Dayan". It is also the only historical city without city walls.
The ancient town is crisscrossed with waterways. The water from the Yu River, which is led from the Black Dragon Pond, is divided into one-third, three-ninths, and then into countless canals in the city. Therefore, you can follow the water flow into the city from the north gate and walk to the Sifang Street in the center.
The block is full of shops selling all kinds of beautiful ethnic shawls, Dongba products, or delicacies such as flower cakes and baba. There is also a bar street, which is extremely lively at night with many foreigners.
