Lijiang Old Town has always been a popular tourist destination. This time, I explored the key routes in depth, experiencing the must-visit free observation deck, the iconic waterwheel, the culturally rich mosque, the historic Changma Ancient Path, and the charming Wishing Pavilion filled with blessings and wishes. The itinerary is perfect for a half-day to full-day trip, easy to navigate, and full of the authentic charm of Lijiang Old Town.
🗺️ Recommended Itinerary:
Start from the northern entrance of the Old Town, follow Yuyuan Road to the mosque, then pass by the Wishing Pavilion to reach the Changma Ancient Path. Climb up to the free observation deck for a panoramic view of the Old Town, and finally return to the iconic waterwheel, perfectly connecting the highlights of Lijiang Old Town.
1. Mosque (20 Yuyuan Road, 08:00-17:00)
Surrounded by Lijiang's ancient architecture, the mosque embodies a blend of local and Islamic cultural elements. It's a serene spot for quiet exploration, offering a glimpse into the culture of the ethnic minorities in western Yunnan. Visiting in the early morning is recommended for a more tranquil atmosphere.
2. Wishing Pavilion (Yuyuan Road, near Yuhe Square, open all day year-round)
This small and exquisite wooden pavilion is adorned with wish plaques. It's a great spot to write blessings with friends and take photos. Bringing your own pen is advised, as they may not always be available on-site.
3. Changma Ancient Path (29 Shishan Road)
This ancient path, though not very long, retains its original charm. A leisurely walk along the stone-paved road offers a sense of the historical Tea Horse Road. Comfortable shoes are recommended for the walk.
4. Free Observation Deck in Lijiang (29 Shishan Road)
Located at the foot of Lion Hill, the observation deck shares the same address as the Changma Ancient Path and is easily accessible from there. It offers the best panoramic view of Lijiang Old Town for free. The view is especially stunning at sunset, with the layered rooftops creating a picturesque scene. Be mindful of the wind and secure your clothing.
5. Iconic Waterwheel (1 Dongdajie Street, open all day year-round)
As a landmark of Lijiang Old Town, the waterwheel area has become a must-visit photo spot. Whether during the day or at night, the atmosphere is delightful. Visiting early in the morning or at dusk is recommended for fewer crowds and better photo opportunities.
🎒 Tips:
- Travel light and bring a portable water bottle, as the winding paths of the Old Town require some walking.
- Use a wide-angle lens for photography, especially at the free observation deck.
- Sunset is the best time to visit the observation deck, so plan accordingly.
- There are many snack shops around the Old Town. Try some local specialties as you explore.
- All attractions are free or do not require reservations, making it ideal for spontaneous visits.
- The distances between attractions are reasonable and easily walkable.
Exploring Lijiang Old Town is not just about taking photos but also about immersing yourself in its rich history and cultural atmosphere.
