Lisbon, Portugal, is a gem for budget travelers, offering vibrant culture without the steep price tags of many Western European capitals. Expect a daily budget of around €45–€60 if you stay in hostels and eat locally. Visit in the shoulder seasons (May/June or September/October) for the best balance of good weather and lower costs.
🚌 Getting Around Lisbon
Lisbon is famously hilly, so comfortable shoes are a DO. The public transport network is efficient and affordable:
• Public Transport Card: Purchase a reusable Viva Viagem or Navegante card (€0.50 fee) and load it with credit using the "Zapping" option for the cheapest per-ride fare on the Metro, bus, tram, and even some regional trains. A 24-hour day ticket is also available.
• Metro & Bus: The Metro is efficient, running until 1 AM. Buses are the most common way to cover routes not served by the Metro. Remember to tap on and off when using the card on buses.
• Trams: Riding the iconic yellow Tram 28 is a must, but often crowded. Consider the Metro or bus for standard travel to save money, as tram tickets paid to the driver are more expensive.
• Rideshares/Taxis: Use sparingly; Uber/Bolt can sometimes be cheaper than traditional taxis, but public transport is usually best for sightseeing within the city.

Dos and Don'ts: DO take advantage of the numerous free walking tours to get oriented and learn history. DON'T lose your Viva Viagem card, as you'll have to pay the fee again. DO seek out the best pastel de nata (custard tart) from local bakeries rather than buying one at a major monument. DON'T leave your belongings unattended on crowded trams like the 28, as pickpocketing is common in tourist areas. Finally, DO explore beyond the main tourist centers like Bairro Alto late at night if you are budget-conscious, as they can be louder and more expensive.
