Mid-to-late October is the prime viewing period for the Longji Rice Terraces. The rice is fully ripe, transforming the terraces into a magnificent golden ocean. The 2025 harvest has been postponed to November 2nd, making the entire month of October an ideal photo opportunity.
The light is softest between 6:30 and 8:00 a.m. Morning mist drifts through the valley, while sunlight casts a magical glow on the rice stalks. High-altitude B&Bs offer panoramic views from the window, perfect for photographing sunrises and seas of clouds.
Tianyu Mountain Residence in Ping'an Village faces the Seven Stars and Moon Viewing Platform, and every room has floor-to-ceiling windows. The Panoramic Building in Jinkeng Dazhai, at the highest elevation, offers unobstructed views, perfect for sunrise photography. For a more authentic experience, opt for Dazhai's characteristic "stilted houses," featuring wooden structures.
After the National Day holiday, the number of tourists decreases significantly. Traveling in mid-to-late October avoids the crowds and provides more space for creative expression. The "Water Mirror Dragon Backbone" during the spring flood season offers a unique aesthetic, but the golden rice terraces of autumn are the most captivating visual feast of the year.
The mountain cuisine is also part of the creative process. Bamboo rice carries the delicate fragrance of bamboo, while bacon and bamboo shoots are authentic mountain flavors. Bamboo chicken, made with new rice, has the rice soaked up the chicken's broth, giving it an exceptionally rich flavor. Freshly brewed oil tea, served with rice crackers and peanuts, is a local specialty for entertaining guests. These flavors, like the golden rice terraces before us, are precious experiences worth capturing.
