Tulou are ancient family fortresses and modern utopias 🌱
I went to the warmer coast of Fujian for New Year's Eve, and chose a different route back to Zhejiang, which was equivalent to a Fujian loop (actually, it was a route I had wanted to take for a long time). Although I didn't stop at many places, I had to visit the tulou. 🌷 Of all the residential buildings in the textbook "History of Chinese Architecture," tulou were the only ones I hadn't seen, so passing by them was a small fulfillment for me. ✨️
I believe most people first learned about tulou from a movie. Although the plot of the movie had nothing to do with tulou, it was the closest depiction of real tulou life. 📷
In the textbook, the description of tulou is quite detailed (actually not detailed enough, but compared to other types of residential buildings, it wasn't just briefly mentioned). I have drawn some cross-sections of tulou and know the general structure and functional layout. 🔔 When I was a child, I liked to draw a big castle on paper, where a big family lived, and each small family had its own space. This is actually very close to the original purpose of tulou, and I have always been curious about what kind of real space can accommodate such a large amount of family warmth. 👣
