When you think of Huanggang, do you immediately recall the childhood fear of the "Huanggang Secret Test Papers"? Haha, don’t be afraid. The real Huanggang is not just about exercise books; it’s a city full of character, with both the scholarly "wen" and the heroic "wu." Here, you can trace the footsteps of ancient literary masters and feel the passion of revolutionary pioneers. Follow me, and I’ll take you to experience a different Huanggang!
First stop: The literary star check-in spot — Dongpo Red Cliff
When you come to Huanggang, the first stop must be Dongpo Red Cliff. Don’t get it confused — this is not the ancient battlefield of the Three Kingdoms’ "Burning of Red Cliffs," but the "spiritual home" of our great literary master Su Dongpo.
As soon as you enter the scenic area, a strong sense of history hits you. Be sure to take a photo under the two giant cliff inscriptions of "Red Cliff" and feel the heroic spirit Su Dongpo expressed when he wrote "The great river flows eastward, sweeping away all heroes." Climb up Qixia Tower to overlook the Yangtze River. Although the river’s course has changed over time, the mood of "The landscape is like a painting, how many heroes have there been?" will surely stir your heart.
Sit for a while in front of the Erfu Hall inside, and imagine Su Dongpo and his friends composing poetry here. You’ll feel those ancient texts you once memorized come alive. This place is perfect for a leisurely stroll — no need to rush through attractions, just soak in the literary atmosphere that spans a thousand years, calming your whole being.
Second stop: Red memory journey — Hong’an & Macheng
After feeling the literary vibe, let’s soak up some "heroic spirit." Hong’an County in Huanggang is famously known as "China’s Number One General County." Over 200 senior generals of the Republic came from here — just hearing that number is impressive, right?
A visit to the Huangma Uprising and the Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery of the Hubei-Henan-Anhui Soviet Area is highly recommended. The memorial hall is rich in historical materials; those precious photos and artifacts silently tell the story of those fiery years. Walking inside, your steps will naturally slow, and your heart will fill with respect. This is not just a tourist spot but a vivid history lesson.
If you have time, you can also visit Macheng. Around spring and early summer, the azalea sea on Guifeng Mountain is spectacular! The mountains are covered in red flowers, burning like flames, perfectly echoing the area’s red history — truly a special feeling.
Third stop: Natural oxygen bar for deep breaths — Luotian Tiantangzhai
After exploring history and culture, let’s go into the mountains to refresh our lungs! Tiantangzhai in Luotian, known as the "Number One Peak of Central China," is the core scenic area of the Dabie Mountains. Here, it’s pure natural beauty — clear mountains, clean water, and air so fresh you’ll want to pack it home.
The climb might be a bit tiring, but when you stand at the summit and see the sea of clouds rolling beneath your feet and the mountains rising and falling before your eyes, that exhilarating feeling of "looking down on all other mountains" makes every drop of sweat worth it! Streams, waterfalls, and strange rocks are everywhere along the way — every step is a scenic view. Summer is the perfect time to visit; it’s much cooler than the city and a great place to escape the heat.
As for food, Huanggang people don’t slack off!
After all that exploring, you must be hungry, right? Huanggang’s cuisine is simple yet delicious.
· Huangzhou Shaomei: This is not the usual shaomai you know. Huangzhou’s shaomei looks like a small lantern, with thin skin and full filling made of pork, peanuts, dried tofu, and more. Soft, glutinous, and oily — one bite is super satisfying!
· Luotian Chestnuts: Luotian is the "Hometown of Chestnuts." The chestnuts here are sweet and glutinous. Whether roasted with sugar or stewed with chicken, the aroma can drift for three blocks!
· Macheng Meat Cake: A must-have dish during local festivals, steamed with a mix of fish and pork. It’s tender and bouncy, never greasy.
· Wuxue Crisp Candy: Definitely the top choice for souvenirs! Crispy and tasty, sweet but not cloying, especially loved by the elderly.
Here are some key tips:
1. Itinerary: Recommended to spend 2-3 days. Day one in the city at Dongpo Red Cliff, day two to Hong’an or Luotian, depending on your energy for a red history tour or natural scenery.
2. Transportation: Huanggang is very close to Wuhan, easy to reach by high-speed train or car. Within the city, taxis or buses connect the attractions.
3. Accommodation: Staying in Huangzhou District is most convenient, with plenty of options for food, drink, and entertainment.
4. Best seasons: Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. See Macheng’s azaleas in spring and enjoy Luotian chestnuts in autumn.
In short, Huanggang is a city that requires you to slow down and savor it. It lacks the hustle and bustle of big cities but has a profound core. Wishing you a happy trip to Huanggang and a rewarding experience!
