In August, while the central plains of China are still sweltering in the summer heat, the highlands of northwest China witness an unexpected snowfall at Gahai Lake. This snow is not the soft, fluffy kind but rather fine sleet mixed with rain, cascading down from the leaden skies and enveloping the entire lake and mountains in a misty veil.
At Gahai Lake, the sleet hits the water's surface, creating countless ripples, as if thousands of fish were simultaneously nibbling at the lake. The grass by the lakeside remains green but is now topped with a white crown, creating a unique blend of green and white hues. In the distance, the mountains first appear faintly through the snow curtain, then gradually fade into a faint silhouette, and finally vanish entirely. As the snow intensifies, it merges heaven and earth into a chaotic blur. Yet, the waterfowl on the lake remain unperturbed, becoming even more lively as they frolic in the snow, sometimes skimming the water, sometimes soaring into the sky. Their black feathers against the white backdrop resemble living ink dots.
Walking along the lake in the snow, the ground crunches underfoot. The prayer flags by the lakeside, dampened by the snow, appear even more vivid in color—red, yellow, blue, and green—fluttering vigorously in the wind and snow, as if trying to break free and soar away. Occasionally, a herdsman passes by on horseback, the horse's hooves leaving no trace in the snow. Both man and beast remain silent, with only the jingling of bells heard, approaching from afar, then receding into the snowy curtain.
The most extraordinary sight is the island in the heart of the lake. Usually lush and green, it is now covered in white snow, appearing from a distance like a floating celestial mountain. When the snow pauses, the lake's surface becomes as smooth as a mirror, reflecting the snowy island above, creating a scene of ethereal beauty. Suddenly, a wild duck glides across the water, breaking the pristine reflection into ripples, blending the sky, clouds, snow-covered mountains, and lake into a dreamy haze.
This August snowfall does not chill but rather brings a refreshing coolness. Gahai Lake in the snow retains the vitality of summer while adding the tranquility of winter, making it a rare spectacle. The wonders of nature are truly evident here. When the snow stops, the clouds part, and sunlight pierces through like golden arrows, illuminating the snowy landscape and reflecting countless golden points of light. At this moment, Gahai Lake transforms into a scene of unparalleled beauty, with jade-like mountains, silver-clad forests, and a shimmering lake surface that seems otherworldly.
How many times in life can one witness snowfall in August? The breathtaking scenery of Gahai Lake is not to be missed.
