Gahai Lake, located in Luqu County of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, sits at an altitude of approximately 3,400 meters. It is the largest freshwater lake in the Gannan region and an important wetland in the eastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Not only is it the source of the Tao River, the largest tributary of the Yellow River, but it was also listed as an internationally significant wetland in 2011 due to its unique ecological value.
History and Ecological Revival
Gahai Lake faced severe challenges due to overgrazing and climate change, drying up three times in 1995, 1997, and 2000, with its water area drastically shrinking. Since 2000, efforts such as building water diversion channels, constructing dams, implementing grazing bans, and ecological restoration projects have helped the lake recover from less than 500 hectares to 2,700 hectares. Today, it serves as a crucial water conservation area for the upper reaches of the Yellow River. The lake is now a habitat for rare bird species like black-necked cranes, black storks, and whooper swans, and even traces of snow leopards have been recorded, showcasing a significant improvement in biodiversity.
Geography and Scenic Features
Surrounded by vast grasslands, Gahai Lake offers a stunning landscape in summer, with wildflowers blooming and the lake reflecting the blue sky and white clouds. The northern side of the lake has been developed into a scenic area where visitors can stroll along wooden walkways, climb observation towers for panoramic views, and watch water birds fishing and soaring. The best bird-watching season is from May to August, with over 80 bird species, including black-necked cranes, gray cranes, and bar-headed geese, attracting numerous photography enthusiasts.
Travel Tips
Tickets: Approximately 70 RMB (subject to seasonal adjustments); recommended visit duration: 1-2 hours.
Best Season: June to August for lush green grasslands and blooming wildflowers; September for autumn hues.
Notes: Mosquitoes are common near the lake in summer, so bring insect repellent; taking photos with herders' horses may incur a fee, so inquire beforehand.
The beauty of Gahai Lake lies not only in its natural scenery but also in its transformation from ecological crisis to a "green oasis." If you yearn for an untouched highland sanctuary, this destination is worth exploring.
