Luxor Travel Guide: Temples, Tombs & Sunrise Balloons

#citypassguide #luxor #egypt

If I had to visit just one city in Egypt, it would be Luxor. Known as the world’s greatest open-air museum, Luxor is packed with ancient wonders, from massive temples to the tombs of pharaohs. Here’s how to make the most of your trip:
🌄 Hot Air Balloon Ride over Luxor
A must-do experience! Watching the sunrise over the Nile and ancient temples from above is magical. I paid $50 for a sunrise flight, though prices may vary (some offer non-sunrise flights for around $40). Even if you skip the ride, wake up early to watch the balloons float across the sky — it’s worth it.

🏛 Top Places to Visit
* Valley of the Kings: This necropolis houses the tombs of ancient Egyptian pharaohs, including the famous Tutankhamun. Entry includes 3 tombs; electric shuttle to the site costs 20 EGP. Extra tombs require additional tickets.
* Temple of Karnak: The largest ancient temple in the world, dedicated to Amun-Ra. You’ll be amazed by the massive columns and open courtyards.
* Luxor Temple: Located in the city center, near the train station. Built by Amenhotep III and Ramses II, it’s easy to explore on foot. Grab a bite at the nearby McDonald's with temple views — yes, really!
* Hatshepsut Temple: Stunning from a distance, this temple honors Egypt’s powerful female pharaoh. Inside, you’ll find detailed wall carvings.
* Lotus Papyrus Shop: Learn how real papyrus is made and the difference between genuine and fake ones. You can even get your name written in hieroglyphs!

🚫 What to Skip
* Banana Island: Personally, I found it underwhelming. If you go via boat, beware of surprise "landing fees" (I paid 50 EGP). A short Nile boat ride without the island stop is a better choice.

🚆 Travel Tips
* I skipped the Luxor Museum since I planned to visit the museum in Cairo.
* The journey from Luxor to Cairo took around 9–10 hours by bus and cost me 260 EGP.
