Macau is a lovely place for overnight visit or as day trip. While many of us are aware of the Portuguese influence in food and architecture, there are also some delightful gardens with Chinese designs.
We visited the Lou Lim loc Garden in the eastern part of the Macau peninsula. It is located just a few blocks north of the Guia lighthouse, and is a short 5 min drive from the Macau ferry terminal.
The garden was built in early 20th century by an influential businessman named Lou Kau who made his fortune from selling pork. The garden has a main pavilion with yellow facade, and the architectural design is with a mixture of Portuguese and Chinese aesthetic. The balcony in the back is particularly beautiful. The garden follows that of the Suzhou - style design. The nine curved bridge and pagoda sit in the back amongst the maze-like rock garden.
The Macau government took over the garden in 1973, and it is now opened to the public after a series of renovations. Locals and tourists can enjoy a walk in the beautiful park for free amongst the narrow streets of Macau.
