In a remote area of ​​Macao, there is a heartwarming story and architectural miracle spanning centuries - the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows in Jiu'ao! It not only carries the history of leprosy prevention and treatment in Macao, but also witnesses the perfect fusion of humanistic care and modernist design!

Leprosy is one of the oldest infectious diseases in mankind, and Macao pioneered leprosy treatment in East Asia as early as 1568. From the clinic under the Holy House of Mercy to Baishalan and Jiu'ao Leprosy Hospital, countless doctors and caring people have contributed here for more than 400 years. Among them, Jiu'ao Our Lady Village, as the only remaining site of the government leprosy hospital in Macao, is full of legends. When the hospital was built in 1885, it was just a few simple brick houses. After reconstruction and renaming, it gradually became a loving family with the efforts of priests and inmates. The inmates call each other "brothers and sisters", and work together to farm, repair, and cook, turning this land into a warm home🏡

The most shocking thing here is the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, which was completed in 1966! Designed by Italian builder Xia Gangzhi, it is full of modern geometric aesthetics: a rectangular plane with a triangular facade, 8 sets of inclined beams corresponding to the "Seven Sorrows", which not only ensures drainage function, but also contains deep meaning; the open space without pillars in the room allows the altar and the seats for parishioners to surround in a fan shape, bringing hearts closer. The crucifix on the front facade of the church comes from the Vatican and was created by Italian sculptor Francisco Messina. It is solemn and full of artistic sense.
