Jiuao is located in the southeast of Coloane, Macau. It is a quiet corner. Take bus 21A and pass by Hac Sa Beach, Coloane Hai Tian Resort Hotel (formerly Westin Hotel), Jiuao Village, and get off at Jiuao Oil Depot. There are many oil tankers parked at the alighting site, and you can also see airplanes taking off and landing in the distance, but it is sparsely populated.
At the bus stop next to the Jiu'ao oil depot, walk about 100 meters in the direction of the return bus. There is a slope next to the road that goes straight up to the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, the old church, and five small houses of the former leprosy hospital. The architecture here is very Portuguese. The church has a triangular roof and the four corners of the windows are dark green. However, you can only take photos of the exterior of the church as it is not open to tourists. After talking to the security guard, I learned that mass is only held in this church on special holidays. There are also sculptures of the Virgin Mary or statues around the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. One of the statues of the Virgin Mary has a base made of stacked oyster shells, which is quite unique.
There is a room at the old site of the hospital that displays the furnishings of the former ward. There are chairs placed on the terrace of the cottage. Sitting on the terrace and watching the sunset is very picturesque. The old hospital site is open until 6pm every day except Wednesday. If you come on a weekend, you can also take photos around it. There are fewer tourists here and it is very quiet. Friends who are interested in photography can take pictures as they like without being disturbed by tourists.
