The heritage buildings in Macau's historic district are bright yellow, centuries-old structures. Why is such a beautiful restaurant called "Poor House"? Actually, it was formerly a building called "House of the Poor," originally housing refugees and the poor. Most of the residents were women, hence the name "Poor House."
ALBERGUE 1601 is a renowned Portuguese restaurant located within the heritage buildings of the historic district. It is helmed by renowned Portuguese Executive Chef Pedro Almeida. The restaurant's charming ambiance is a highlight, with the giant rooster and unique tree at the entrance a must-photo.
The seafood is especially noteworthy. Appetizers included garlic shrimp and Iberico pork. For main courses, we ordered lobster risotto and grilled octopus. The lobster risotto was dense and the rice grains were distinct. The rich, sweet lobster flavor emanated from each bite, while the grilled octopus had a crisp, unforgettable texture. For dessert, we ordered sawdust pudding and pear stewed in port wine. The desserts were just right, not too sweet, and delicious. I really thought I was at an outdoor restaurant in Lisbon!
