There are several options available for those looking to visit Macchu Picchu, whether to follow a tour directly sending you there or to hike up to Macchu Picchu itself. I would recommend to go for the 1 day hike option to enjoy some of the scenery that you wouldn't be able to see otherwise. For those who are fit and enjoy hiking, there's also the longer hike which takes you through the full Inca Trail over 5 days.
On the 1 day hike, you will take the train and get off at KM104. From here you will start the hike and halfway through reach Winay Wayna, another famous Inca ruin. You will reach the highest point of the hike towards the end which is the Sun Gate, and from there you will get the first view from above Macchu Picchu.
Llama Path was the tour operator I followed for the hike, the guides were friendly and kept an eye out for all of us as we hiked. These hikes require permits which are limited so make sure to book with the tour operator few months in advance if you're interested.
