Fort Santiago, located in Intramuros, Manila, is one of the most significant historical sites in the Philippines. It was built in 1571 by Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi as a military defense fortress, marking the start of Spanish colonization in the country.

The fort is named after Saint James the Moor-slayer (Santiago Matamoros), the patron saint of Spain. It served as the headquarters of Spanish colonial forces and later as a prison and execution site under different regimes—including the British, American, and Japanese occupations.

Its most famous prisoner was Dr. José Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines. He was imprisoned in Fort Santiago before his execution in 1896. Today, the Rizal Shrine Museum inside the fort honors his life and legacy.

Fort Santiago now stands as a powerful reminder of the country’s colonial past and its long struggle for freedom.
