Maoxian County belongs to the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province. It is located in the northwest of Sichuan Province and the southeast edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. The county spans the upper mountain valley areas of the Minjiang and Fujiang Rivers and has a plateau monsoon climate, with terrain sloping from northwest to southeast. As of 2024, Maoxian County administers 11 towns.
Maoxian has historically been a Qiang ethnic settlement and is a core area for the Qiang people in China. In the first year of King Wu of Qin (310 BC), the Jian Di Circuit was established. In the eighth year of the Tang Zhen Guan era (634 AD), Huizhou was renamed Maozhou. In the second year of the Republic of China (1913), it was first called Maoxian, named after the Maoshi Mountain within its territory. The county was liberated in January 1950 and belonged to the Maoxian Special District. On July 7, 1958, Maoxian, Wenxian, and Lixian counties merged to form the Maowen Qiang Autonomous County. In 1963, the administrative systems of Wenchuan and Lixian were restored, and Maoxian became part of the Maowen Qiang Autonomous County. In 1987, when Aba Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture was renamed Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Maoxian County was restored to its original name. The county is home to many attractions, such as the Ancient Qiang City of China and the Diexi-Songpinggou Tourist Scenic Area. In December 2019, the Maoxian Qiang Cultural Ecological Protection Zone was designated a national-level cultural ecological protection zone. On July 31, 2018, Maoxian County was removed from the list of poverty-stricken counties.
