Hidden high on the western face of Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the Sigiriya Frescoes are among the most treasured works of ancient Sri Lankan art. Painted over 1,500 years ago during the reign of King Kashyapa, these delicate murals depict graceful women adorned in vibrant garments and fine jewelry, believed to represent either celestial maidens or attendants from the royal court.

The frescoesโ€™ rich colors โ€” ochres, reds, and greens โ€” have survived the centuries thanks to a natural rock overhang that shelters them from the elements. The style is uniquely Sri Lankan, with soft lines, warm tones, and remarkable attention to detail, giving each figure a lifelike expression.

๐ŸŒŸ Highlights:

Around 18 surviving figures (originally thought to be hundreds)

Masterful use of natural pigments on rock

Intriguing historical debate about whether the women are goddesses, apsaras, or royal ladies

Access via a sheltered spiral staircase on the rockโ€™s western wall
