Those who have never been to the grassland must visit it at least once in their lifetime, just as one must see the ocean. The vast green expanse is intoxicating and soul-expanding, creating memories worth cherishing forever. This seven-day, six-night private car tour of the grassland felt like an independent trip—no group tours, no rushed itinerary, and no exhaustion, making for an excellent experience.
For those who prefer a more relaxed journey, you can discuss with your driver-guide to skip certain attractions, opting to lounge at the hotel or explore freely. The trip can be fully customized to your preferences. After returning, both my husband and I agreed it was absolutely worthwhile—truly a highlight of our lives! 👍👍👍
**Recommended 7-day, 6-night itinerary by the guide:**
**Day 1:** Hailar - Hulunbuir Grassland - Morigele River - Ergun Wetland (Stay: Ergun Hotel)
**Day 2:** Ergun - Genhe - Aoluguya Reindeer Tribe - Moerdaoga (Stay: Moerdaoga Hotel)
**Day 3:** Moerdaoga National Forest Park - Eagle's Beak - Shiwei/Linjiang Town (Stay: Russian-style wooden house in Shiwei)
**Day 4:** Shiwei - Olochi Manor - Border Highway - Heishantou - Bonfire Party - Mongolian Yurt (Stay: Stargazing Yurt in Heishantou)
**Day 5:** Grassland Sunrise - Horseback Riding - 186 Colorful Ribbon River - Matryoshka Square - Night Tour of Manzhouli (Stay: Manzhouli Hotel)
**Day 6:** Manzhouli - Genghis Khan’s Horse-Tethering Post - National Gate - Night Tour of Manzhouli (Stay: Manzhouli Hotel)
**Day 7:** Manzhouli - Barga Mongolian Tribe (Grand Equestrian Show "Dance of the Horses") - Hailar
**Notes on the itinerary:**
- We skipped Eagle's Beak and the grassland sunrise (too early!), but enjoyed a **free sunset view** in Heishantou—perfect for photography.
- We didn’t enter Matryoshka Square or the National Gate (just took photos outside), but visited the **luxurious Matryoshka Hotel** to admire its grand, opulent style. Girls can rent princess dresses for fun photoshoots! 👑
- **Shiwei Town was my favorite.** An evening cruise along the Ergun River offers glimpses of Russian villages on the left bank, satisfying curiosity about the Sino-Russian border. Summer visitors escaping the heat will love Shiwei’s cool breeze, leisurely strolls, and cozy cafes.
- Fans of Chi Zijian’s *The Last Quarter of the Moon* should visit the Ergun River and the Aoluguya Reindeer Tribe Museum in Genhe to learn about the Ewenki people’s history—characters in the novel are based on real Ewenki figures. The book comes alive here!
- **Manzhouli is magical at night**, glowing like a fairytale castle under golden lights. As China’s largest land port, it’s bustling with Russo-Chinese charm. Shop for Russian chocolates, Hulunbuir dairy snacks, and Inner Mongolian beef jerky (free shipping for orders over ¥200)—great souvenirs! The cool summer nights make it an ideal retreat.
**Tips:**
1. **Mosquitoes are plentiful**—bring repellent and essential oils.
2. **Strong sunlight**—pack sun-protective clothing and spray.
3. Post-pandemic, **cold/flu and stomach meds** are wise to carry.
4. **Dry climate**—stay hydrated and grab fresh fruits whenever possible.
5. **Compare prices** for tickets/hotels—some are cheaper online, others via guides.
6. **Dress in layers**—cool mornings/evenings, warm midday (light jacket + summer wear).
7. **Eat at clearly priced restaurants** to avoid surprises.
