Located within the grounds of Matsue Castle, near Kounkaku, Matsue Shrine enshrines key figures significant to the Matsue Domain and its founding. The main deities worshipped here include Matsudaira Naomasa, the first lord of the Matsue Matsudaira family; Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate; Matsudaira Harusato (Fumai-ko), the seventh lord of the Matsue Domain; and Horio Yoshiharu, the founder of the domain. This shrine not only preserves the history of Matsue but also symbolizes reverence for its pioneers and rulers.
Originally established in 1877 (Meiji 10) in Rakuzan, Nishikawatsu Town, the shrine was then called "Rakuzan Shrine" and was dedicated solely to Naomasa. In 1898, Matsue Toshogu Shrine (dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu) in Nishio Town was merged with it. The following year, the shrine was relocated to the Matsue Castle grounds and renamed "Matsue Shrine." It wasn't until 1931 (Showa 6) that Horio Yoshiharu and Matsudaira Harusato were also enshrined. Annual festivals are held on May 5th and November 5th, a tradition that continues to this day.
When visiting Matsue Castle, consider stopping by Matsue Shrine to immerse yourself in the historical context of this castle town. It serves not only as a spiritual haven for locals but also as an excellent place for travelers to learn about the historical figures of Matsue.
