Entering Matsue Castle from the north, you'll inevitably cross the Kita-Somon Bridge. During the Edo Period, this was a crucial entrance to the castle, leading to the family's residence (towards the present-day Matsue History Museum). It was not only a major transportation route but also a crucial point for samurai and townspeople to travel between the castle and the surrounding area.
During the Meiji Period, the original wooden bridge was renovated into a graceful stone arch, nicknamed "Spectacles Bridge" for its resemblance to glasses. The Kita-Somon Bridge we see today was restored in 1994 (Heisei 6) based on archaeological research and ancient documents, adhering to the style of an Edo-period wooden bridge. It measures approximately 18.54 meters long and 3.82 meters wide. Although a modern reconstruction, it allows one to relive the historical landscape of the past.
Walking across the Kita-Somon Bridge, it's easy to imagine the scene of samurai, clad in armor, crossing the bridge to enter the castle. The bridge is more than just a structure; it carries historical memories, transporting travelers back in time to the castle town of Matsue.
Address: Tonomachi, Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture (North Exit of Matsue Castle)
Access: Take the Recline Bus from JR Matsue Station to the "Matsue Castle (Otemae)" stop, then walk for about 10 minutes.
