Located in Shiomi Nawate, Kitahori-cho, Matsue City, the former residence of Takigawa Kunsan is a well-preserved samurai residence that has been designated as a cultural property of Matsue City. This is the birthplace and childhood home of the renowned Sinologist Dr. Takigawa Kunsan (1865–1946). Dr. Takigawa taught for many years at the former Second High School in Sendai and spent his later years in seclusion here until his passing in 1946 (Showa 21).
Dr. Takigawa dedicated his life to the study of Chinese classics. His magnum opus, "Shiji Kaichu Kosho" (Annotated and Verified Records of the Grand Historian), is considered the most comprehensive and meticulous commentary on the "Shiji" (Records of the Grand Historian) and is regarded as an immortal masterpiece in the global academic community. His research laid the foundation for modern Oriental studies. To commemorate his achievements, a monument was erected at his former residence in 1975 (Showa 50). The inscription was written by Kojiro Yoshikawa, an honorary professor at Kyoto University, and calligraphed by Tamaki Ogawa. The monument is made of natural stone from Aoki-cho, Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture, exuding solemnity and elegance.
Strolling along the historic streets of Shiomi Nawate and visiting this samurai residence not only allows you to immerse yourself in the historical ambiance of Matsue but also to reflect on the legacy of a great scholar whose academic spirit continues to inspire future generations.
