The beauty of Matsue Castle's tower: the elegant protection of the shaggy-tailed chafer and the flower-shaped window โœจ๐ŸŸ

#AugustDestinations2025
The exterior of Matsue Castle is majestic and restrained. Rather than primarily white lacquer walls, it is clad in thick black shimotani panels, creating a calm and majestic atmosphere. It is known as the "Chidori Castle." The most striking feature on the roof is the 2.08-meter-tall wooden copper plate-carved shari, the Oshari being considered the largest extant in Japan.

The details of the castle tower's roof are also ingenious: the Irimoya-hafu displays an elegant triangular silhouette, while the oni tiles have varying expressions, creating a rustic yet whimsical atmosphere. The Kaburagegio (fish-shaped ornament) symbolizes a prayer for fire prevention and protects the wooden structure. The central flower-shaped window on the third floor, inspired by Zen Buddhist temples, adds to the classic and spiritual atmosphere.

Furthermore, the castle walls feature stone cascades designed to cascade down rocks to defend against enemy attacks. The stone walls, constructed of rugged Yakuana stone, stand approximately seven meters tall, creating a profound sense of security. Standing before the castle tower today, one can still experience the elegant blend of strategic and aesthetic beauty of the past.
