A Sacred Space for Love & Legend

#hellohalloween

Located at 227 Sakusa-chō, Matsue City in Shimane Prefecture, the Yaegaki Shrine is a venerable Shinto site steeped in myth and matchmaking tradition. It venerates the deities Susanoo‑no‑Mikoto and Kushinadahime, whose legendary union is said to have taken place where the shrine now stands.
Throughout the shrine grounds you’ll find symbols of relationship blessings—including the famed “Mirror Pond” (Kagami-no-ike), where visitors float a coin on a thin paper sheet to divine the timing of their love life.
The setting is peaceful and enchanting: tall cedar trees line the approach, traditional shrine architecture leads into a wooded sacred grove (“Sakusame-no-mori”), and camellia trees known as meoto-tsubaki (husband-and-wife camellias) signify lasting bonds.

What to See & Experience
• Mirror Pond Ritual: Purchase the special commemorative paper at the shrine office, place a coin on it, set it on the pond, and watch how long it floats—many visitors believe the faster it sinks, the sooner their wish will come true.
• Main Shrine (Haiden): Rich with tradition, the main hall is beautifully maintained and offers a moment of reflection away from the more touristic spots.
• Sacred Grove & Camellias: A quiet walk behind the shrine leads to the forested grove where the myth takes place. Within, you’ll find the camellia trees symbolising marital harmony—perfect for snapped photos or silent appreciation of nature and story.
