Entsuin Temple is located next to Zuiganji Temple to the west and serves as the mausoleum of Mitsumune, the second son of the second lord of the Sendai Domain, Tadamune. Mitsumune was highly skilled in both literary and martial arts, but he passed away in Edo in September 1645 at the young age of 19. Entsuin Temple was established in the same year by Tadamune to mourn his son's death, and the mausoleum (Sankei-den) was completed in 1647.
The temple was affectionately known as the 'Rose Temple' because the head priest, Meido Amano, planted a variety of roses over an area of more than 6,000 square meters and opened it to the public. Nowadays, the number of roses has decreased, and moss has been planted throughout the temple grounds, giving it the nickname 'Moss Temple' and providing visitors with a sense of tranquility.
