Nestled at 280 William Street in Melbourne’s CBD, the Hellenic Museum is housed in the historic Former Royal Mint building—an elegant 19th-century Renaissance-Revival landmark designed by architect J.J. Clark. Since opening in 2007, the museum has become Australia’s only dedicated venue for exploring the art, culture and history of Greece, spanning some 8,000 years.
Inside, you’ll journey through galleries that present both ancient and modern Hellenic worlds: from Neolithic treasures and dazzling Byzantine icons to contemporary artworks and immersive cultural programming. Notable highlights include a hoplite armour display dated 400-200 BCE and a partnership with Athens’ Benaki Museum for landmark loans. The museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (closed public holidays), with adult admission A$16, concession A$10, and free entry for under-18s.
Whether you’re visiting to connect with Greek heritage or simply seeking a culturally rich stop in Melbourne, this museum offers intimate scale, depth and architectural charm. Plan to spend around 1–2 hours.
