Pompeii, nestled under the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, is a fascinating site that showcases the affluent and sophisticated lives of ancient Romans. What struck me the most during my visit was the advanced level of civilization in this ancient city. The well-constructed water and sewage systems throughout the city, the intricate frescoes found in the homes of the nobility, and the grand amphitheater and public baths all serve as a testament to the greatness of Roman civilization.
Particularly intriguing is the building known as the **'Lupanare'**, a state-sanctioned brothel, and the explicit murals left on its walls. These provide a glimpse into the open and pragmatic lifestyle of Roman society at the time. While some may label it as 'decadent,' it is, in fact, a valuable historical record that reflects a candid aspect of their daily culture.
Most visits to Pompeii are day trips from Naples via the Circumvesuviana train, but given the vastness of the site, it is recommended to allocate at least 4-5 hours. The archaeological site has several entrances, including the Porta Marina entrance, where most facilities and audio guide rentals are located. As the site is extensive and complex, and signage may be insufficient, it is advisable to prepare a map or guide app in advance. Experiencing the weight of history and the preserved lives of Romans amidst their tragic end is truly a unique experience. It is undoubtedly one of the must-visit historical sites in southern Italy.
