Hakkaisan Ropeway in Niigata is one of the best places in Japan to view autumn leaves. Located in Niigata Prefecture, the Hakkaisan Ropeway stretches 2,217 meters and is one of the best cable cars for enjoying fall scenery in Japan. Starting around mid-September, you can see trees like paulownia, maple, and beech gradually turning red from the top of Hakkaisan. By November, Hakkaisan is covered in white snow, with the fiery red leaves creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene. The best time to view the autumn leaves is from mid-October to early November.
In March 2020, the brand-new Rokko Arima Ropeway in Hyogo Prefecture officially began operation. The cable car cabins feature large glass windows, allowing a 360-degree unobstructed view of the magnificent scenery. It lets you enjoy thrilling excitement while taking in the spectacular views. You will see the local bellflower trees dyed bright red in autumn. During the peak season in November, you can also enjoy picturesque scenes reminiscent of Nishiki-e (a Japanese art form using colored woodblock prints). From early to late November, you can admire the autumn leaves.
Then take the Unzen Ropeway, located in Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Kyushu. The Unzen Ropeway is still manually operated by trained drivers to ensure your safety while enjoying the autumn leaves. When you reach the summit, you will see garden maples, Honshu maples, hawthorn maples, and golden bells, all turned yellow and red. Late October to early November is the most beautiful period for autumn leaves.
