Miyazaki - Devil's Washboard

#5月好去处2025
The Devil's Washboard (鬼の洗濯板) is a very famous natural geological wonder in Miyazaki Prefecture. It refers to a row of regularly arranged wavy rocks on the coast around Aoshima. From a distance, it looks like a washboard used by giants to wash clothes, hence the name. These rocks are formed by the interlaced accumulation of sandstone and mudstone on the seabed. After years of erosion and uplift by waves, they form a rare terrain with high academic and tourist value.

This geological landscape will completely surface at low tide. Visitors can walk up to the rocks to observe and take pictures, and even see small creatures or intertidal plants between the cracks. In addition to the area around Aoshima, you can also see a larger and more spectacular group of "Devil's Washboard" near the Horikiri Pass Observatory on the Nichinan Coast.

It is very convenient to visit Aoshima Shrine together. It is recommended to go there at low tide to see the clearest appearance of the complete rock ridge. It is visually impactful and is also a popular attraction for photography and parent-child travel.
📍Address: Aoshima, Miyazaki City, Miyazaki Prefecture (outer coast of Aoshima Shrine)
🚃Transportation: About 10 minutes walk from JR "Aoshima Station"
🕰️Opening hours: Open all day (it is recommended to check the low tide time)
💰Fee: Free admission
