② Wakimachi Udatsu Townscape
📍 162-2 Wakimachi, Wakimachi, Mima-shi, Tokushima
The Udatsu Townscape in Mima-shi, Tokushima-ken, developed from the Edo period to the Meiji period due to indigo traders (Awa indigo).
Udatsu merchant houses line the streets along the 400m-long street.
"Udatsu" refers to a small wall between the roofs of the first and second floors. They were attached to the boundary between neighboring houses as a fire prevention wall, and wealthy merchants competed to build udatsu to show off their wealth, which is why it is called Udatsu Townscape.
Although the street is compact, there are cafes and souvenir shops scattered around, making it just the right distance for a stroll.
You can reach Udatsu street by parking at the nearby roadside station "Ai Land Udatsu" (free parking) and walking through the Funakiba Park that spreads out around the indigo merchant Sasano Yoshida family residence.
Food🍽️: "Aikura" in Udatsu street in Wakimachi, Mima city. I had the famous Awaodori chicken steamed in a bamboo steamer! It was very filling and delicious!
