Mono Lake is like stepping into another world. The eerie limestone tufa towers rising from the water create a surreal landscape, especially at sunrise when everything glows in soft light. The lake is incredibly salty, and the smell is distinct but not unpleasant. I took the boardwalk trail at South Tufa and spotted countless birds — it’s a birdwatcher’s paradise. The surrounding mountains add to the drama of the view. There’s a stillness to Mono Lake that makes you feel far away from everything, even though the town of Lee Vining is just minutes away. It’s hauntingly beautiful.
