Huashan is breathtaking, but planning your route matters — especially with the steep ascents and long walks. Here are the 4 main route options explained, so you can pick what fits your stamina and travel style.
⸻
① 西上西下 (West Up, West Down)
✅ Easiest & most energy-saving. No need to walk back the same way, and you’ll see East, South, Central and West Peaks in under 3 hours (not counting queuing).
💡 Best for elderly & families or when you are climbing during weekends as the cablecar queue can be quite long— There’s even a toboggan ride to bring you down to the West cable car station, then a shuttle bus to the West Entrance, saving lots of walking.
⚠️ Downside: It’s the most expensive option cos of the cost of cablecars and toboggan rides. You will also not be able to visit the North Peak which is a lot further away from the other four peaks (西、南、东、中)
⸻
② 西上北下 (West Up, North Down)
✅ Includes the North Peak views, and slightly cheaper than the first route and will allow you to cover all five peaks. About 4-6 hours walking depending on your stamina.
💪 Best for those with better stamina. From North Peak down, the slope is easier but can be tough on the knees — bring knee protection.
⸻
③ 北上西下 (North Up, West Down)
⚠️ Extremely difficult route. Expect several hours of steep UPHILL climbing. Most people at North Peak show “faces of despair” before finally reaching the West cable car.
💪 Only for those who want a real challenge.
⸻
④ 北上北下 (North Up, North Down)
⚠️ Requires a long climb up and down, retracing the same path. Other than being the cheapest option, it has no real advantages.
⸻
🌟 Tips for Visitors
	•	🎟 Tickets and transport add up, so budget carefully.
	•	👟 Wear proper shoes and consider knee braces if taking longer downhill routes.
	•	🕘 Start early to avoid long queues and crowds.
	•	🍱 Pack snacks and water, as food prices rise sharply on the mountain.
✨ Summary
	•	Most Comfortable: 西上西下 (good for elderly & families).
	•	Balanced Effort: 西上北下.
	•	Challenge: 北上西下.
	•	Skip if Possible: 北上北下.
