A fortress built in 1587 on the east side of Muttrah Bay to protect against attacks from the sea during the Portuguese occupation. It began as a preparation for an attack by the Ottoman Empire . It was later recaptured by Omani forces and was the site of fierce battles in the 18th century civil war. It was also used as a prison in the 20th century, but since the 1970s it has been preserved as a cultural asset, and after restoration in 1983, it has also become a guest house and museum for visitors.
