📍Gunkanjima, Nagasaki
Gunkanjima, a World Heritage Site located in Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is about 40 minutes from Nagasaki Port. 🛥️
It's said to have been named after its resemblance to a battleship.
(The angle in the first photo seems to give the best view.)
Its official name is "Hashima."
The island once thrived as a mining site for undersea coal, but the mine closed in 1974.
It is now uninhabited, with apartments and other buildings from that time remaining as ruins. 🏢
Currently, it's only accessible on tours. ✨
.
*Please note that you cannot land on Gunkanjima unless weather and safety regulations are met.
The weather criteria are expected to be met approximately 100 days per year.
We were blessed with good weather and were lucky enough to land ♡
We took a cruise that took us to two islands: Takashima and Gunkanjima. ⛴️
(Tour duration: approximately 2.5 hours)
The island is home to the oldest reinforced concrete apartment building in Japan, Building 30.
A valuable building in Japan's architectural history. 🏢
It has been over 100 years since its completion in 1916, and researchers predict it only has about six months left to live.
The buildings on the island are numbered, with the names going up to Building 71 (apparently unrelated to the order of construction).
Gunkanjima has a designated viewing area, and visitors are not permitted beyond this limit.
(Only a portion of the southern part of the island is open to the public.)
The tour guide's explanation was easy to understand, and since I've always wanted to visit this island, I'm glad I was able to visit at this time. ☺️🤍
Note: Explaining the island's history would make this post even longer, but in the 1950s, when television penetration was only 8% nationwide, Gunkanjima had a whopping 100%! It also boasted the world's highest population density, about 18 times that of Tokyo, making it a thriving island.
