The Naminoue Shrine is only five minutes away from the Naha Sansui Hotel where we stayed, so of course we had to visit it.

Naminoue Shrine is the first of the Eight Shrines in Okinawa. During World War II, the Eight Shrines were almost completely destroyed, and only the torii gate of Naminoue Shrine was left. The shrine we see now was rebuilt after the war, which took decades to complete.

Because it was built on a cliff, on the beach of Naminoue, it looks like a shrine on the waves from a distance, hence the name - Naminoue Shrine.
