📍Naminoue Shrine
⏰ Opening Hours: Open year-round, daytime visits recommended
📫 Address: 1-25-11 Wakasa, Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture
🌿 As you step into Naminoue Shrine, the towering torii gate and the prominent "Naminoue Shrine" plaque immediately catch your eye, symbolizing this sacred place that protects Okinawa. This historic shrine is dedicated to the guardian deity of the sea, making it especially significant for local fishermen and those working at sea. During our New Year visit, a "Happy New Year" banner was hung on the torii gate, creating an atmosphere that blended festivity with solemnity.
🧼 At the purification fountain, visitors respectfully perform the cleansing ritual before proceeding to the main shrine. This is a meaningful tradition in Japanese shrines. As we approached the main hall to pray, there was a steady stream of people queuing up, all sincerely offering coins, bowing, clapping, and making their wishes. The main hall's architecture uniquely combines Ryukyu red tiles with traditional Japanese shrine design, making it a popular spot for photos.
📷 Despite the crowds, the entire visit was orderly. The shrine also features a fortune slip and amulet shop, where you can purchase exclusive Naminoue Shrine paper bags as souvenirs. Although our visit was brief, it left a lasting impression. If you're planning a trip to Okinawa, I highly recommend including this seaside shrine in Naha City in your itinerary for a peaceful and cultural experience.
