Okinawa is an interesting place

Shuri Castle is unlike any other castle I’ve visited in Japan. Nestled in Naha, it offers an intriguing window into the Ryukyu Kingdom’s rich and unique culture, which stood apart from the rest of mainland Japan.
The moment we walked in, we could already sense how different it was — from the bright vermillion gates to the architectural detailing that echoed Chinese influence, especially in the roofing and layout. It truly felt like a blend of cultures, a reflection of Okinawa’s long history as a trading hub between China, Japan, and Southeast Asia.
It’s free to walk around the outer castle grounds, and the views from the top were stunning, with sweeping panoramas of Naha city. The grounds were well maintained and great for a leisurely stroll with photo spots at every turn.
Although the original castle had suffered damage from past wars and fires, restoration efforts have kept the spirit and design alive. We were glad we came — it was not just a sightseeing stop, but a moment of cultural learning and appreciation.
