Fukushuen Garden opened in 1992 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the friendship agreement between Naha City and Fuzhou City in Fujian Province, China, and the 70th anniversary of Naha City's municipalization.
The relationship between Naha City and Fuzhou City dates back to the 14th century, which is the Kamakura period in Japanese history.
The Ryukyu Kingdom at that time was in a period of great trade and was very prosperous.
The people of Kume Village (Kuninda), who migrated from Fujian Province, supported this prosperity.
The people of Kuninda had specialized skills such as interpretation and navigation, and had a great influence on education in the Ryukyu Kingdom afterwards, and the first public school in the Ryukyu Kingdom, Meirindo, was also established here.
Kume, Naha City, where Fukushuen Garden is located, is exactly where Kuninda was located.
