Namba Yasaka Shrine, located in Motomachi, Naniwa Ward, Osaka City, is a historic shrine dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, Kushinadahime, and the Eight Offspring Deities. Legend has it that the shrine was established in the 4th century to combat a local plague by enshrining Gozu Tenno for protection. The shrine was destroyed during an air raid in 1945, and the current structure was rebuilt post-war. Its most iconic feature is the 12-meter-high and 11-meter-wide lion head stage, symbolizing the "devouring of evil spirits," which attracts numerous visitors seeking blessings for their careers and peace.
The giant lion head, constructed in 1974 (12 meters high, 11 meters wide, and 10 meters deep), serves as the shrine's hallmark. Its interior functions as a prayer stage, while its imposing exterior is said to swallow evil spirits, bringing victory and good fortune. Inspired by the local traditional lion dance, the lion head's eyes light up during nighttime events such as New Year, Setsubun, and summer festivals, adding a mystical touch. Occasionally, the interior hosts Kagura dances or lion dance performances, especially during festive periods, showcasing the vibrant side of Shinto culture.
Visitors can take photos in front of the lion head to experience its stunning visual impact. They can also purchase wooden prayer plaques (around 1,000 yen) to write their wishes for academics, careers, or health, which are regularly blessed by shrine priests. Unique protective charms (for academics, safety, or wealth, priced around 500-1,000 yen) incorporating lion head designs are also available.
Situated in the Namba area, the shrine is just a 15-minute walk from Dotonbori, offering a striking contrast between tradition and Osaka's modern nightlife. After visiting, guests can head to Dotonbori to enjoy local delicacies like okonomiyaki or takoyaki, immersing themselves in Osaka's food culture. Nearby Namba Parks shopping center provides a mix of modern and traditional goods, perfect for souvenir shopping.
Subway: A 10-15 minute walk from Namba Station (Midosuji Line, Exit 3) or a 7-minute walk from Daikokucho Station (Exit 2).
Walking: About 15 minutes (1 km) from Dotonbori, allowing visitors to experience the lively atmosphere of Osaka's southern district along the way.
