Sun Moon Lake

The lake is indeed beautiful and one should visit while in Taiwan.

You can cover the lake in a day. Take HSR to Taichung from Taipei main and then take bus from Taichung station (exit 5 1F) to Sun Moon Lake. Bus leaving in every 10-15 mins. You can use easy card to tap and travel. Note that easy card works for all buses and train, do remember to grab one as soon as possible when you reach Taiwan to make your travel easier! You can always get the card and top up value at any 7-11 or Family mart across Taiwan

Tour around the lake can be done either bus or boat. Both passes can be bought from either Taichung or once you reach Sun Moon Lake. For boat and bus they have different routes and both compliment each other. If you take my suggestion, buy boat pass only and use easy card for bus. Boat route have two stops, on 2nd boat stop, you can have lunch as there are plenty of options. We travel to bus to watch pagoda. Return to the boat stop and take boat back to Sun Moon Lake.
