😀 Purpose
Interact with art!
Stay in a Mongolian tent, or yurt!
Schedule
Day 1
Flight from Tokyo to Takamatsu Airport. Take a bus from the airport to Takamatsu Port. From Takamatsu Port, take a 30-minute ferry to Naoshima. From Naoshima Port, take the municipal bus to Tsutsuji-so. The bus's design is already artistic: a Yayoi Kusama pumpkin bus.
Tonight's accommodation at Tsutsuji-so is a Mongolian tent, or yurt. It's right in front of the ocean, next to Yayoi Kusama's yellow pumpkin.
There are no shops nearby. We made a reservation for a barbecue for dinner.
We visited the Chichu Art Museum and the Bessel House Museum. There's also an outdoor ceiling, but photography is prohibited inside the building, so we didn't take many photos.
Day 2
In the morning, we strolled near the yurt and had the yellow pumpkin all to ourselves. The ocean was beautiful, and just looking at it was soothing.
For breakfast, I bought bread before boarding the ferry and enjoyed it with coffee from the electric kettle in my room. There are vending machines on the premises, by the way.
After that, I took a bus to the Art House Project area.
I strolled around the town and enjoyed art, including the Ando Museum, the shrine, and Go'o Shrine.
There are a few restaurants in the area.
I took the bus to the port and returned via Takamatsu Airport on the same route.
Notes
Some art exhibits are outdoors, and you'll be staying in tents called yurts, so your stay will be weather-dependent.
Please note that dinner options on Naoshima are limited.
Toilets and baths are not located in the yurts, but in other buildings. Showers and baths are charged separately.
Transportation
Public transportation is available, so there's no need to rent a car.
Also, Takamatsu Airport is served by Jetstar and low-cost carriers, so getting there is cheap if you're lucky.
Photogenic Spots
Yayoi Kusama's pumpkin.
The Monet-inspired garden in front of the Chichu Art Museum.
The ocean is beautiful. The outdoor art exhibits are also impressive.
Accommodation
Tsutsuji-so. I highly recommend staying at this Naoshima accommodation. Located right in front of the ocean, Tsutsuji-so is conveniently located near the bus stop for art appreciation.
The tents are a bit fun. Japanese-style rooms are also available.
Reservations are available for 7,700 yen per person per night, and barbecues are available for 3,800 yen.
