This is the head temple of the Hosso sect in Noborioji-cho, Nara City.

Hosso is a sect that was brought from China during the Nara period and is the oldest sect still in existence in Japan.

It was counted as one of the Seven Great Temples during the Heian period.

The Seven Great Temples of Nara are the seven official temples that existed in Heijo-kyo and its surrounding areas during the Nara period and were protected by the imperial court.

Among them, this temple developed while having the closest connection to the city of Nara.

It is registered as a World Heritage Site as one of the "Cultural Assets of the Ancient Capital of Nara."
