Göreme at Night — A Viewpoint I Found by Accident

I wasn’t planning anything special that evening — just a quiet walk after a long day. No GPS, no destination. I followed a dusty path between cave houses, thinking I’d just stretch my legs… but instead, I stumbled onto one of the most beautiful spots I’ve ever seen.

It was a small hill — no signs, no crowds — just a wide-open view over Göreme. The sun was just starting to set, painting the sky in orange and pink, and the fairy chimneys below seemed to glow in the warm light. I sat there in silence as the day slowly gave way to night, the town lighting up one golden window at a time.

It felt like Cappadocia was whispering, not performing. And I was lucky enough to be there for it.

After the sun disappeared behind the cliffs, I wandered back into town — relaxed, a little dusty, and starving. That’s when I found a small family-run restaurant serving Göreme’s famous pottery kebab (testi kebabı). They brought the clay pot to the table, tapped it open with a knife, and released the most amazing aroma. The meat inside was slow-cooked, tender, rich, and smoky — exactly what I needed after that accidental evening hike.

✨ Tip: For the best sunset view, head up toward Aşıklar Tepesi (Lover’s Hill) about 30 minutes before sunset. It’s an easy 10–15 minute walk from Göreme center, and totally worth it.

I went looking for nothing — and ended up finding a perfect moment.
